Jackson's Blessing

We had the chance from December 10th to the 14th to travel to Pittsburgh and visit with Zac and Joy and their family and participate in the blessing of our newest grandson Jackson. Brigg and Havalah came down Saturday afternoon to be with us as well - Megan and Jeremy really wanted to come also, but her doctor strongly suggested she not be 4.5 hours from home, being 8 months pregnant with twins! Though we missed her & family dearly, we are quite satisfied she made the right choice to obey her doctor!

While Zac was at work Friday, the rest of us went to a bakery that was most impressive - we had sandwiches and cookies and took some treats home for dinner that night!! The smells alone were enough to put pounds on! Yummmm!

Saturday morning we had a great time walking in downtown Pittsburgh - it was quite chilly but it was so fun to be with family! Anne and Andrew had a chance to visit with the jolly old elf himself.

Anne's face says to us: "Who are you REALLY?"

A section of downtown featured gingerbread houses made by children from local schools and other groups. We were very impressed with the creativity of some of the displays - and there were hundreds of them.

The star of the weekend - Jackson Howard Turner in his blessing outfit - the same one Zac, Brigg and Andrew were blessed in!

Brigg, Havalah and Dad T.

The 3 Turner kids - Anne and Andrew sure do love their little brother:)

The sweet Turner family - what wonderful hosts they were for the weekend - we sure do always love being with them.

Grandma Darlin and Grandpa Pickle with the 3 Pittsburgh grandkids.

Andrew and Anne got to open their big Christmas present while we were there - a new air hockey game!! They were quite excited and very intense as they played.

Good thing President Kimball said napping was an appropriate Sabbath activity - looks like the 3 Turner boys took that advice!

Thanks Zac and Joy for hosting such a wonderful weekend!

New bathroom

We wanted to share a few photos about our remodel project - downstairs bathroom. We are not quite done yet - still need to install the shower door, paint the room, and get curtains for the window - it's substantially done enough to share. We quite enjoy the new look!
(This was going on during my recovery at home!)

Old fiberglass shower has been removed - and we discovered we had a large hole around the drain... (Mike our plumber)

which was built back up!

and the tile now installed - notice the space we had to the right of the shower now has a nice cabinet installed.

New toilet and sink adorn our new room - notice how the tile comes part way up the walls.

Aren't ladders for climbing?

On Veteran's Day, November 11, we were having a great morning - I didn't have to work and Marcie T didn't have to work until 2 pm. We'd been up early and had gotten 5 of our 6 roof sections cleaned off and the gutters as well. I was nearly done with the roof over the garage and driveway, Marcie went in to get ready for work - and then it's a blur. Somehow, we don't know for sure what happened but I fell off the roof - once Marcie found out, the ambulance was called and I was taken to the hospital with a head contusion, several broken ribs, and a shoulder that was quite compressed. Two priesthood holders from our stake where entering the hospital to see a member of their ward when Marcie saw them and asked them to give me a blessing.

I was in the hospital for 3 days and didn't get back to work until November 30. Marcie took care of me in a way that words can't describe - an angel of mercy and caring. It took a while before
I could do menial tasks for myself and Marcie was always there to help. I'm now back at work full time - the ribs are pretty much healed but the shoulder is still compressed with the collar bone not in it's proper place at all - but lukily it's not broken. I'm grateful Marcie was a constant reminder that I needed to be grateful that I wasn't hurt worse - and that's very true. I start physical therapy on the shoulder on Tuesday Dec. 29th and hoping for good success there. Thanks to all of you whose prayers and thoughts were offered in my behalf - I am truly grateful that I will fully recover. Here are a couple of photo's - too bad I don't have the movie of the actual fall, maybe some years from now I'll be able to watch it!

Not a very clear picture of the shoulder in question - a bit yellow from bruising.

I was accussed of rehearsing for a spot in a horror movie - not true! Just couldn't reach my right hand up far enough to shave and still didn't feel like smiling much.
(Marcie: The hardest part for me was that he no longer sang as he wandered the house. There was an eerie silence that has never been in our home before when Scott was home!! But now the singing is back!!)

After a big storm, Marcie went out to clean up the yard alone - soon friends from the ward were there and made quick work of what would have been a very long day.

My first walk after the fall - notice the little pillow given me at the hospital to hold against my ribs. Boy did it come in handy the first night in the hospital when I had a 14-minute episode of the hic-cups! (Marcie: Wow, he doesn't look like he feels very good, does he?!)

My first attempt at tying a tie - though difficult, the task was accomplished.

About 10 days after the fall, and after a big wind storm which left our yard strewn with branches, Marcie was again outside working by herself. A firetruck pulled to the front of the yard and 5 firemen got out - they told Marcie that they were responding to a false-alarm fire nearby, when one of the 5 (a paramedic who had assited me to the hospital) noticecd Marcie working outside and knowing the situation, suggested they take 20 minutes and help out. What a blessing they were to her - the whole yard was cleaned up in those 20 minutes - it would have taken Marcie several hours. We've been truly blessed!

Last Day and Lattin's

Before Scott changed jobs, his staff had a nice potluck for him and gave him some wonderful and very practical gifts!
Scott opening the gift of web cam's for the family so we can "skype" each other! We've already started and it's wonderful for us to see each of our kids and grandchildren!!

Here's a photo of some of the gang who were able to attend. They also gave us a gift certificate for dinner at Falls Terrace!

One of our favorite places to go on a cold but "non-rainy" Saturday morning is a cider mill called Lattins. Here is Marcie T with a sampling of their wonderful apples for sale.

A trip to Lattins is not complete without one of their apple fritters. Here some fresh ones are just being cooked - they told us that they average cooking about 2,000 every weekend!! We were glad to take four of them off their hands!!

Wicked Stake Conference

This blog will be words only - sorry no pictures. As I looked at the title I realized that there should be a dash or slash between Wicked and Stake Conference, since they are two separate events to to talked about. But I guess in today's venacular, wicked could mean "the best" and stake conference was, so I guess the title will stand!

Last Saturday, September 12, we went to the Paramount Theatre in Seattle and watched the play Wicked. Wow - it was electrifying!! We loved every minute of it and are so glad we listened to the sound track for weeks before going to the play. Many of you have seen the play and we certainly recommend it to any who have not. After the curtain call for the matinee we attended, we hustled home to get ready for the 7 pm adult session of our stake conference.

It was wonderful as Saturday night sessions usually are. The stake presidency focused on a scipture in Alma 37:6 - "that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass". They talked how important it is to ask, seek, and knock and reminded us that Elder Holland suggested we do those 3 things though scripture study, prayer and obedience. We were reminded of the simple task Elisha gave to Naaman in order to cleanse his leprosy, and that each time we do those small and simple things we add oil to our lamps so that we can have enough light to see clearly. It was a wonderful meeting - pie and ice cream to follow but I was so gabby that by the time we reached the cultural hall the refresments were all gone so we had to run to Safeway to get our treat!

For the Sunday session we joined all the stakes in the states of Washington and Alaska for a broadcast from Salt Lake. Brother Gibbons from the general YM Presidency spoke and told a great story from his youth in Nevada. He was trying to catch a gila monster and chased one down an old mine shaft until he got lost and his flashlight lost its battery power. He crawled around on the tunnel floor until he felt the old iron tracks that used to carry the rail car from the mine to the surface. He followed that back to safety - and reminded us of the iron rod in our own lives. Elder Piper from the 70 conducted the meeting and spoke about a fishing trip he took as a youth in Westport WA and how sick he got. His father suggested he pick a fixed spot on the horizon (the shore) and focus on that to feel better, which he did. He encouraged us to set our sights on the true and fixed principles of the gospel. Elder Nelson of the Twelve spoke - he talked mostly to the Primary children and had 10 of his grandchildren sing - and invited all Primary children in WA and Alaska to also stand and sing 3 verses from our favorite "Follow the Prophet". He spoke to us also about the miracle of the Book of Mormon. He talked about today's efforts in translating the Book of Mormon from English into other known languages. With the aid of the computers and lexicons of today, church employees translate about 1 page per day. The Prophet Joseph averaged between 8-10 pages a day translating from an unknown language into English! Our dear Prophet, President Monson, concluded our stake conference and talked with us about saving "lost batallions" and in his great way illustrated that concept with many wonderful stories.

It was a great weekend - I guess into todays parlance, it was wicked!!

Marcie Birthday!!

As we've mentioned earlier, we had a wonderful time in Leavenworth WA several days before Marcie's birthday. While there we bought her a wonderful music box, Harry Potter style. We'll try and attach the little video of it so you can enjoy also! (Sorry the video is a bit out of focus) I also bought her a recorder instrument that's she always wanted to play, along with an instructional DVD! She was practicing quite nicely tonight.

Leavenworth, WA!

We spent a wonderful weekend (Thursday-Saturday) in Leavenworth, WA about 3 hours from Lacey. It's a small Bavarian-themed town in the moutains of central Washington. They have an outdoor theatre where we saw Singing in the Rain and we thoroughly enjoyed it - unfortunately they won't let you take pictures so you can't see the beautiful environment where the theatre stands.

Dinner at our favorite place in town - Jager Schnitzel and Rheinischer Saurbraten and German Black Forest cake for dessert! YUM

Hanging baskets are not only on every street corner but above nearly every shop in town.

It took us an hour to walk through this store called Kris Kringl - hundreds of thousands of Christmas oranments.

Crazy hat store - this one's for you Havalah!!

Marcie getting ready to enter the Nutcracker Museum - over 5,000 varieties of nutcracker's from Roman times through now - unbelievable.

Scott with the Great Mouse King at the museum.

Typical corner flower display

Our hotel room had a balcony overlooking the city park and the busiest street in town - here's one view.

Trip East - Erie and Pittsburgh PA

The third leg of our trip included a visit to Lake Erie. We were surprised at how warm the water was - especially considering what it looked like last New Year's Eve when we were there!

Brigg brought shade.

Has Havalah grown taller or is Megan buried to her knees in sand?

Pa with Hunter and Hyrum in Lake Erie.

Zac's new digs at the beautiful new children's hospital in Pittsburgh.

Mini golf, Joy showing us how it's done.

Anne giving her Dad a few tips, it must have come in handy!

The pitch.................

The swing!

Thanks to our family for a wonderful trip!!

East Trip 2009 - Kirtland, Ohio

We stopped in Kirtland, Ohio on our way to Erie, PA. We took a tour of the restored city.

The Kirtland Temple

This room in the Newell Whitney store is where the Prophet Joseph received many revelations.

This small room is the School of the Prophets - we had a marvelous experience here as the 2 sister missionaries bore testimony of what took place here.

A blonde-wood chair, made by Newell Whitney, that traveled with them to Missouri, Illinois, and finally Salt Lake. Later his family sent it back to be part of the restored store.

Jeremy and Brigg discussing the inner workings of the Kirtland sawmill.

Brigg in the ashery "tasting" the chemical by-products - a new found career?
