The downing of the trees!!

Presidents Day 2011 will be a memorable for us - our two trees out front finally came down, and not in a wind storm.  We have talked about taking them down for several years and today was the day.  We had a very noteworthy day as you'll see.  First just a record of what the two trees look like from down the street

and then from laying on the sidewalk!

The chief cutter taking the limbs off - some were as big as trees themselves.

The zoom on this camera is great
Chipping -
can't believe how big the limbs are that can go through the chipper
Need help placing that highest ornament?  I've got a name I can give you:)
One of the smaller divots of the day
Limbs gone - two at work getting the trees down
A log on its way down
The last shove before heading off
This one flying away was a bit too big - as you'll see!
It moved a big rock out of its place, smashed a few bricks and...
Cracked the city main water line leading from our meter - lucky for us it wasn't the new line we just put in.  However it does seem that we always have some adventure when doing house repairs!
We called a city crew - they responded very quickly, found the crack and had it repaired in about 15 minutes.

A wish come true!
We took a short video but don't know quite how to put it on the blog - once we figure it out we'll upload it as well.  All in all, a very productive day - and we're so grateful there were no injuries (I even got on the roof under close supervision to clean off all the sawdust!!)

Holy cow! Anne wants to know what you will do with the logs. She thinks they would make a good fort.

Anne, there are some guys out front right now cutting those HUGE logs into 16 inch chunks and then splitting the chunks so they can be used for firewood. The logs are so big and heavy that you can't even roll them across the grass. They have a long stick with a hook on the end and they get up on the log, hook it with the stick and then jump off the log pulling the stick toward them. Then the log will roll. Those trees were just TOOOOO big!!!

What a day you all had! I sure don't envy the lumber jacks (or whatever their title is) their jobs! I think we should save some wood to build a tree house!!!

Your dreams have finally come true. We know you've been wanting those trees to come down for a long time. What a project! Happy to know that it went fairly smoothly, with the exception of the water main repair. it will be fun to see pictures of your "new" front yard someday. = )
